First Glimpse of Mok Fah Waterfall

Walking through the lush forest trail, the sound of water crashing onto rocks grew louder with every step. Then, suddenly, the trees parted and there it was—Mok Fa Waterfall, tall, majestic, and framed by dense greenery. The waterfall’s mist hit my face as I stood there, mesmerized.

This one-level waterfall is located in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park on the Mae Malai-Pai road. Mok Fa waterfall is surrounded with lush green trees, is full of water all year round. Within the same area there are also the Mork Fa caves (Bat Cave) and nature trail.

The main attraction is of course Mok Fah Waterfall. It is huge, 60-metres high! It’s allowed to swim there, so take your swimming suit and towel. Water is cold and fresh, perfect for cooling during the hot day in Thailand.

Must-Do Activities

  • Taking a Dip: Without hesitation, I jumped into the cool pool beneath the falls. The water was refreshingly cold—a perfect reward after the short trek.

  • Snapping Photos: I spent ages capturing the waterfall from different angles. The morning light filtering through the trees made every shot Instagram-worthy.

  • Exploring Surrounding Trails: Our guide showed us a nearby viewpoint offering a panoramic glimpse of the forest below.

  • Learning Local Lore: According to our guide, Mok Fah Waterfall is considered a vital stop on many Tour from Chiang Mai to Pai itineraries due to its natural beauty and accessibility.

Facilities Available

Though not heavily developed, Mok Fah Waterfall does offer basic amenities like clean restrooms, a small parking area, and a few local vendors selling snacks and drinks. Bring cash, as there’s no ATM nearby.

Best Time to Visit / My Tips

I visited during December, and it was perfect! The cool, dry air made hiking comfortable, and the water flow was strong but safe. If you’re considering going, try to arrive before 11 AM to enjoy some solitude before the afternoon visitors arrive. And don’t forget insect repellent!

How to get to Mok Fah Waterfall

Mok Fa Waterfall is located on the north side of Doi Suthep – Pui National Park, approximately 45 kilometers from Chiang Mai city, along Route 1095 towards Pai and Mae Hong Son. After reaching the main highway, continue on a semi-paved road for a couple of kilometers—well-marked signs will guide you straight to the falls. For travelers without personal transportation, hiring a private car, tuk-tuk, or songthaew from Chiang Mai is a feasible option. Keep in mind, however, that due to the distance, it’s most practical to include Mok Fa Waterfall as part of a broader journey, such as a tour from Chiang Mai to Pai, rather than making a single-purpose trip.
