Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail: A Breathtaking Hike through Chiang Mai’s Pristine Wilderness
Getting truly experience by walking along Kiew Mae Pan Nature Trail through the beautiful green forest, passing giant Rhododendrons, waterfalls and streams which leads to a cliff where you can enjoy breathtaking mountain views. This nature trail is unforgettable! The two hour hike takes you through the jungle and out to a path with the best views!
Kiew Mae Pan nature trail situates at approximately 2,200 meters above sea level, is 3.2 km. which 3 different zone of forest and takes around 2-4 hours to complete. Kew means narrow path, and this one snakes along a towering mountain range which is home to great variety of plants and animals.
First zone, Start from the rain forest with full of moss and fern. The trail rises up through evergreen forest with an attractive waterfall. The forest floor was littered with leaves and organic matter forming a dense layer that would take long to decompose because of the cold climate. This section of the forest was devoid of human activity and therefore in superb condition.
From the green forest, soon you will get into the big open space with the lovely view of the mountains and the cool breeze of the view points. Over look view as the birds’re fling in the sky. On the walk way , the trail will lead you along side of the mountains area through Alpine Savanna. You may be lucky and have a chance to see Mainland Sero and Goral climb on the cliff. See the twin rocks of Kiewmaeparn with the lovely view for photos
Next up was highlight of the trek, This was the area where the pathway is narrow between two slopes in the opposite direction. On the left was the slope falling into the forest where trees grow green, tall and strong. On your right, the mountain just drops into a plunging valley that merges into other valleys, creating a beautiful contour of blueish-green. The reason why this happens is that there is more sun, rain and moisture on one side whereas the other side just gets washed out to form a slope. It was slightly dangerous because if we weren’t warned about the forest slope on our left.
It is also a good place to see flowering red rhododendron trees that thrive on acidic soil at altitudes of 1,800 metres and above sea level, commonly found in the Himalayas.
The bird’s eye views of Phra Mahathat Naphaphon Phumisiri and Phra Mahathat Napha Methanidon (King and Queen Pagoda) can be clearly spotted. From here, on a clear day you can see all the way to Mae Chaem district. Rain water running down the mountains is clean and clear, the source of Mae Chaem and Mae Ping rivers.
Going back, you will be led back to the forest again. You trek trough the damp forest floor under the canopy of towering trees and back to the starting point.
